PE 185HJ Hiking: Beginning Lab Hours: 3 Credits: 1
Introduces hiking skills, techniques, and appropriate gear to safely hike and progress in a regular hiking program based on personal fitness level. Includes basic hiking safety, appropriate equipment, route planning, and environmental considerations. Students will provide appropriate clothing, shoes, equipment, water and food.
Student Learning Outcomes: Upon Successful completion of the course, students should be able to:
Beginning
- Identify beginning-level trails at local parks or outdoor areas and gear required.
- Apply basic hiking skills and fundamentals of hiking.
- Utilize environmentally responsible practices and demonstrate appropriate trail etiquette.
- Develop hiking safety plans and a beginning level fitness routine.
- Explain how to use hiking in a lifelong fitness or wellness program.
