DSL 230 Diesel Technology Advanced Hydraulics

Covers advanced hydraulics and hydrostatics used on heavy equipment, farm machinery, and other equipment. Emphasizes troubleshooting procedures and repair.

Prerequisite: DSL 220  and DSL 221  each with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Concurrent: DSL 231 
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Analyze and determine the problem and implement the correct repair of heavy equipment hydrostatic drives, hydraulics, advanced electrical diagnosis, components, and systems
  2. Conduct repairs in an ethical and professional manner, respecting industry safety and environmental guidelines.
  3. Communicate with co-workers, customers, management, and public in a professional and knowledgeable manner.
  4. Apply hydraulic system knowledge to equipment applications for maintenance and troubleshooting. 
  5. Diagnose failures and practice researching the failure symptoms in service manuals and other sources to research and diagnosis failures. 
  6. Research and locate industry repair literature. 
  7. Interpret and apply hydraulic schematics.

    • Run diagnostic routines for hydrostatic drive machines

    • Research and identify the difference between a closed and open center hydraulic system 
    • Equipment testing, excavator, skid steer 
  • Preventative maintenance 
    • Explain the fundamentals of regular hydraulic system maintenance 
    • Complete maintenance procedures following manufacture recommendation 
  • Troubleshooting and diagnosis 
    • Identify primary causes for hydraulic systems.  
    • Inspect, test, and diagnosis a hydraulic system following the manufactures recommended procedures.
