BH 201 Addiction and the Family System Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Presents basic information regarding addiction and its effects on the whole family. Focuses on the family system and dynamics related to coping with addiction and other chronic conditions that impact the family life cycle. Introduces the major schools of family therapy including strengths-based and solution-oriented approaches.
Prerequisite: Admitted to Behavioral Health program, or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Explain how each family member is affected by addiction.
- Identify the resources and research in the addiction field regarding family treatment.
- Identify common characteristics and family dynamics operating in the family system.
- Identify the major schools of family therapy.
- Describe and appropriately use models of engagement, diagnosis, and intervention to assist families in treatment and recovery processes.
- Discuss strategies that develop basic skills to cope with the emotional intensity and power dynamics commonly seen in family systems that are coping with addiction.
