HM 230 Health Information Management Practicum Lab Hours: 6 Credits: 3
Provides workplace experience in a healthcare-related setting. Covers policies and procedures in tasks set forth by site, develop skills using various software applications, and to help students perform as an entry-level coding professional.
Prerequisite: Enrolled in healthcare coding certificate program. You must earn grades of “C” or better in all required courses in the first two terms.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Participate in a 40-hour practicum experience in a medical facility face to face or remotely.
- Demonstrate applying ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS codes ensuring compliance with current guidelines and regulations. Apply ethical principles and standards to promote integrity and accuracy.
- Demonstrate use of healthcare information systems and coding software to manage patient information and process claims.
- Use critical thinking skills to evaluate and resolve billing and coding discrepancies.
- Communicate effectively with healthcare providers, patients and insurance companies demonstrating professionalism and ethical standards.
- Perform a 20-hour coding project that will encompass inpatient, outpatient, and surgical patient types to be overseen by Chemeketa HIM staff.
- Recognize the importance of continuing education and certification in the fields of healthcare coding and billing for employability.
