AUM 263 Automatic Transmissions and Transaxles 1

Lecture Hours: 3
Lab Hours: 6
Credits: 5

Introduces the fundamentals of automatic transmission operation. Explains methods of gear change, power flows, and basic hydraulic principles used in automatic transmissions. Emphasizes the service and overhaul of automatic transmissions.

Prerequisite: AUM 161  and AUM 176 , each with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Define and explain automatic transmission parts and components.
  2. Describe service and overhaul procedures on automatic transmissions and transaxles.
  3. Carry out industry standard transmission assembly and overhaul procedures.
  4. Describe the operation of transmission modulators, TV linkage, governors, and manual linkage, and how they work together.
  5. Describe a clutch, band, servo, and their related operations.
  6. Relate hydraulic principles and fundamentals, including valves, and their operations, to control shifting and shift points.
  7. Define torque converter components, torque converter clutches, operation, and testing, including stall tests.
  8. List and define new transmission designs and component development; Describe electronic developments pertinent to automatic transmissions.
  9. Carry out industry standard band adjustment, special tool and equipment usage.
  10. List and price parts needed for a complete transmission overhaul; Compute labor charges for a complete transmission overhaul.
