HDF 222 Family Relationships

Credits: 3

Examines communication patterns and relationships between adults, children and adults, and within intimate personal relations (marriage, families, and couples). Emphasizes understanding the role of the family and its consequent role in the development of the individual.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 090 ; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe models of personality development that assist in understanding self and others. 
  2. Use techniques for listening, confrontation, problem-solving and dealing with values, collisions in personal and professional environments. 
  3. Analyze cultural and personal views of primary relationships and their functions. 
  4. Explain factors necessary to develop love, trust, respect and intimacy. 
  5. Assess the importance of perception, personality differences, values, and their effect on the relationship. 
  6. Examine the impact of special issues in relationships (sexuality, parenting, finances, relatives, in-laws, occupation, male-female roles and expectations). 
  7. Discuss the impact of common stressors on children and families. 
  8. Relate the effect of stages of adult development on relationships and find resources for positive change.
