ART 224 Type Design 1 Lecture Hours: 2 Lab Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Introduces the study of typography and its importance in contemporary culture and in the design of visual communications.
Prerequisite: VC 111 and VC 114 , each with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Identify the major type classifications and trace the historic development of type.
- Use industry standard type vocabulary and units of measure in working with type.
- Apply legibility and readability criteria in typographic use.
- Select typefaces to communicate attitude and style as well as an intended message to a target audience.
- Distinguish well designed typography as used in visual communications.
- Analyze distinguishing characteristics of typefaces in the identification of fonts.
- Apply effective type design principles to a variety of projects.
- Discuss the significance of letterforms and glyphs in art, and popular culture as well as in graphic design.
