BA 177 Payroll

Credits: 4

Provides a comprehensive overview to Federal and State payroll practices and procedures. Includes computing and recording gross wages, withholding amounts, and net wages. Introduces computerized and manual systems to create and maintain employee earnings records and payroll registers; compute employers taxes and other payroll-related costs; make payroll tax deposits; complete payroll reports and W-2s; and make general journal entries for all payroll transactions.

Prerequisite: BA 115  or BA 211Z , either with a grade of C or better; and computer literacy; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  • Explain and apply the main provisions of state and federal laws to payroll and reporting processes. 
  • Distinguish between employees and independent contractors, exempt and nonexempt employees and complete appropriate initial paperwork for each.
  • Describe various methods of timekeeping and various pay arrangements, and compute gross wages using these methods and arrangements. 
  • Describe internal controls and record retention for a payroll system. 
  • Compute employee payroll, employee taxes, deductions, employer taxes and Workers’ Compensation insurance costs. 
  • Use manual and computerized systems to complete payroll and related reports. 
  • Make general journal entries to record payroll-related transactions. 
  • Describe wage garnishment process and be able to comply with appropriate agencies, forms, etc. 
  • Describe child support collection process and be able to comply with appropriate agencies, forms, etc.
