BLD 151 Building Codes 1

Lecture Hours: 3
Credits: 3

Studies the scope, meaning, and use of the Model International Residential Code including occupancy classifications, building area, height and location limitations, types of construction, exits, and fire resistive standards. Focuses on commercial structures.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Locate and describe those administrative rules which regulate the use, location, height, and occupancy of buildings.
  2. Identify and define all building uses by their building code occupancy classifications.
  3. Analyze the primary differences and requirements between building code construction type classifications.
  4. Analyze the relative fire hazards of buildings and their locations on property using code standards.
  5. Compute maximum building areas which may be affected or regulated, based upon degree of hazard and determine height of buildings in feet and stories including maximum height as regulated by the code.
  6. Identify specific fire rated assemblies, fire spread classifications, fire retardant materials, including their proper applications.
  7. Evaluate the design and application of building egress systems, including corridors, stairs, horizontal exits, stair and smoke-proof enclosures, and exit passageways.
