BLD 181 Mechanical Codes 1

Lecture Hours: 3
Credits: 3

Introduces the thermodynamics of heat and how it relates to the mechanical appliance. Examines the International Mechanical Codes general code requirements for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment. Studies the fuel gas piping system from the gas meter to the appliance, and the combustion air requirements for appliances that burn gas fuel. Stresses evaluation of appliances and equipment for its listing and installation instruction for residential applications and commercial applications.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Explain the purpose and scope of the Oregon Mechanical Specialty Code (OMSC), International Residential Specialty Code and related standards in the regulation of mechanical appliances, equipment, and systems.
  2. Communicate code compliance issues, using terminology within the mechanical code and industry standards.
  3. Inspect the installation of heating appliances, ventilating systems, and cooling equipment using uniform standards, testing, listing, and labeling of mechanical equipment.
  4. Apply the general requirements for the fabrication and installation of duct systems that provide building heating, cooling and ventilation and identify and size duct system components.
  5. Explain the first two laws of thermodynamics and the principles of heat transfer and describe the process of pyrolysis and explain its hazards.
  6. Determine if the installation of a given heating, cooling or ventilating appliance, equipment or system complies with the OMSC, International Residential Specialty Code and related standards.
  7. Apply the principle of combustion in order to compute combustion air supply requirements for fueled appliances.
  8. Recognize approved material and equipment used in the installation of fuel gas piping and size both residential and commercial fuel gas piping distribution systems.
  9. Apply the general requirements for the provision of outside air to building occupants through mechanical ventilation.
  10. Locate and apply mechanical codes to family dwelling construction.
