BLD 268 Foundations, Excavation, and Grading Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Covers the fundamentals of and the code requirements for regulating excavations and fills for any building or structure, construction of foundation and retaining structures, and general grading. Presents code requirements and emphasizes application to plan review and inspection functions. Uses grading and building plans and soil reports to complement the codes.
Prerequisite: MTH 052 with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Set-up the structure and organization of the IBC, with respect to foundations, excavations, and grading.
- Interpret and apply the provisions of Chapter 18, Appendix J, and other related chapters of the IBC, to the plan review and field inspection of foundation and retaining structures, excavation, and grading.
- Read grading and foundation plans.
- Apply basic foundation and retaining structure design and analysis principles, especially as they relate to plan review and field inspection.
- Identify various soil classifications
- Employ terms and methodology used in preparing soil and foundation investigation reports.
