BLD 290 Building Inspection Technology Capstone Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 2 Credits: 2
Integrates all aspects of learning in the Building Inspection Technology program, with emphasis on building department organization and responsibilities, building code provisions, plan review, building inspection, and effective communication. Gives students exercises in analysis, evaluation, and creativity relating to the building-development process. Promotes professional growth by requiring students to demonstrate technical skills and encouraging their interaction with experienced mentors in the field of building inspection.
Prerequisite: All Building Inspection Technology courses through the winter term of the second year; or consent of instructor. Concurrent: Second-year spring-term courses in the Building Inspection Technology program. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Identify the roles and responsibilities of various positions within a building department and how the department fits within the state and local governmental structure.
- Understand the processes of issuing permits, conducting inspections, and completing plan reviews while using basic building department software.
- Exercise analytical skills and structural analysis to determine if the plans and blueprints comply with current code requirements and/or the intent of the code while performing plan reviews.
- Perform inspections of buildings at various stages of construction, reference current building code knowledge to write correction notices and reports.
- Communicate technical information and requirements to a variety of stakeholders using written and oral presentation skills.
