ED 101 Introduction to Practicum and Teaching Lecture Hours: 1 Lab Hours: 6 Credits: 3
Examines teaching as a profession. Provides practicum opportunities for direct experience with, and analysis of, educational settings. Explores current issues in education and characteristics of effective schools with an equity lens.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Reflect on the practicum experience for purposes of career confirmation and identify next steps in personal education plan.
- Describe a classroom environment that is safe, inclusive, and equitable for all learners.
- Identify bias and diversity issues in the teaching environment.
- Describe effective teaching practices for student engagement and success.
- Apply/practice professional, ethical and legal knowledge and behavior.
Content Outline
- Examining Roles, Qualifications and Training Required of Teachers and Instructional Assistants.
- Presents a real-world look at today’s students, teachers, classrooms and schools, and explores careers in education through practicum experience.
- Characteristics of Varied Educational Settings, and Understanding of School Governance, Finance, and Law.
- Evaluation of the Components of an Effective Classroom Climate, Behavior Management and Discipline with an Equity Lens.
- Identify bias and diversity issues in the teaching environment.
- Attitudes and behaviors for effective communication and collaboration.
- Awareness of Current Issues in Education and Predict Future Educational Movements Based on Past and Current Events.
- Philosophy of Education with an Emphasis on Education as a Level of Social Justice.
