ED 229 Learning and Development

Application of theory regarding children’s learning and development from kindergarten through middle school, including intelligence, motivation, and the process of learning. Applies theory to teaching strategies and the connection between teaching and learning. Covers varied learning styles and multiple intelligences. Designed for students seeking initial teacher licensure in elementary and middle school teaching.

Prerequisite: Placement into, or completion of WR 115  (or higher); and completion of ED 216 ; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.)
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Define learning and understand the application of theory to classroom practices. 
  2. Explain a cognitive and social process of learning in the elementary years and implications for teaching. 
  3. Identify factors in student motivation in the elementary years. 
  4. Discuss the complexities of learner diversity and the need for differentiation.  
  5. Assess and apply varied techniques to accommodate student differences. 
  6. Develop and use techniques for making learning meaningful and effective.
