ED 265 Inclusion: Special Needs Students

ntroduces the concept of inclusion of children with disabilities in the classroom. Discusses and identifies historical, philosophical, and legal issues related to special education. Includes specific study of the disability categories covered under Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) with special attention to the diverse population of today’s schools.

Prerequisite: Placement into or completion of WR 115  (or higher); and completion of ED 216 ; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.)
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe the historical and philosophical base for the education of students with disabilities. 
  2. Explain the implications of IDEA and inclusion of students with disabilities. 
  3. Identify the 13 categories covered under IDEA. 
  4. Discuss awareness of teacher response and bias as it applies to the diverse needs of children, particularly regarding issues of ability, race, culture, and gender. 
  5. Identify and develop classroom strategies for including students with disabilities. 
  6. List resources and organizations in the public and private sector which provide services for individuals with disabilities  at the local, state, and national levels. 
  7. Describe the diverse nature of today’s schools and families and the implications for inclusion.
