EMT 167B Oregon Emergency Medical Technician - Intermediate, Part 2 Lecture Hours: 4 Lab Hours: 3 Credits: 5
Covers Oregon EMT-Intermediate emergency medical procedures. Introduces the roles and responsibilities of the technician, emergency pharmacology, venous access and medication administration, electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring and management of dysrhythmias, airway management and ventilation, and advanced airway techniques. Includes medical patient assessment and management; trauma assessment and management; and special considerations such as pediatrics, geriatric, and environmental emergencies. Emphasizes clinical decision-making. Covers procedures related to airway, oxygen, ventilation, shock, intravenous, intraosseous, and ECG monitoring, defibrillation, pharmacology and field protocols in the laboratory component. The clinical experience requires the student to observe patient assessment and evaluation in either an emergency department or an urgent care clinic. Students successfully completing this course will be recommended to the Oregon State EMS Office for the licensure process. Failure of this course will require retaking both EMT 167A and EMT 167B.
Prerequisite: EMT 167A with a grade of C or better. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Apply industry standard safe working practices in medical and trauma emergencies.
- Use industry accepted verbal and written communication in transmitting patient care findings and treatment.
- Propose and use correct application of patient assessment and management skills given patient scenarios and following current field protocols.
- Perform the following skills to an acceptable level of performance; (using Oregon EMS skill sheets as a standard, with 90% accuracy in 1 of 2 attempts):
- ECG recognition and interpretation
- Identification of appropriate medication as indicated for specific medical and trauma emergencies including but not limited to:
- Cardiac emergencies
- Respiratory emergencies
- Altered mental status
- Clinical decision-making ability
