ENG 261 Introduction to Science Fiction Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Analyzes science fiction through the reading and discussion of representative works that explore the history and typology of this literary genre. May take a chronological, thematic, or stylistic approach.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 121Z ; or completion of WR 115 with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Articulate, both orally and in writing, a plausible, defensible definition of science fiction literature, including the conventions of the genre.
- Compare orally and in writing, the varying works of science fiction, explaining their similarities with and differences from one another and the conventions of the genre.
- Employ illustrations, both orally and in writing, to demonstrate how various writers have contributed to and challenged the genre.
- Read a literary work at a literal level.
- Read a literary work at a figurative level.
- Identify and define the literary devices covered.
- Differentiate in the literary text(s) among content issues such as literary periods, styles, and themes.
- Write compositions/essays using a controlling thesis statement, textual support, documentation, and standard grammar and mechanics.
- Articulate and defend plausible interpretations of reading assignments orally and in writing.
