ENG 261 Introduction to Science Fiction

Analyzes science fiction through the reading and discussion of representative works that explore the history and typology of this literary genre. May take a chronological, thematic, or stylistic approach.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 121Z ; or completion of WR 115  with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Articulate, both orally and in writing, a plausible, defensible definition of science fiction literature, including the conventions of the genre. 
  2. Compare orally and in writing, the varying works of science fiction, explaining their similarities with and differences from one another and the conventions of the genre. 
  3. Employ illustrations, both orally and in writing, to demonstrate how various writers have contributed to and challenged the genre. 
  4. Read a literary work at a literal level. 
  5. Read a literary work at a figurative level. 
  6. Identify and define the literary devices covered. 
  7. Differentiate in the literary text(s) among content issues such as literary periods, styles, and themes. 
  8. Write compositions/essays using a controlling thesis statement, textual support, documentation, and standard grammar and mechanics. 
  9. Articulate and defend plausible interpretations of reading assignments orally and in writing.
