ENL 031M Intermediate Reading C1

Develops reading skills for academic disciplines and career fields. Broadens the use of grammar, vocabulary, and strategies for reading. Designed for intermediate non-native speakers of English

Prerequisite: Placement according to established criteria based on standardized assessments. 
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Identify, clarify, and /or prepare for the reading purpose. 
  2. Apply prior knowledge of the content and situation, including cultural understanding, to support comprehension. 
  3. Choose from a range of simple strategies and integrate them to monitor and/or enhance text comprehension. 
  4. Locate, analyze, and critique stated and implied information and/or ideas in a simple functional or informational text. 
  5. Draw conclusions related to the common structural elements of a simple literary work. 
  6. Connect people/characters, events, information, ideas, or themes presented in one text with those in other texts and/or in real life to address the reading purpose. 
  7. Recognize “on sight” most words and abbreviations found in familiar contexts and domains.  
  8. Recognize word forms, base words, and affixes in common multisyllabic words.  
  9. Use strategies to acquire and apply meanings of words and phrases. 
  10. Use technology to accomplish required tasks.
