ENL 031N Intermediate Reading C1

Introduces writing as a multi-step process. Designed for intermediate non-native speakers of English. 

Prerequisite: Prerequisite: Placement according to established criteria based upon standardized assessments.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Use a variety of strategies to plan and organize simple enumerative paragraphs (first, second, next). 
  2. Write paragraphs focused on a single topic that includes a topic sentence, reasons, details or examples, and a concluding sentence. 
  3. Use every day and some specialized vocabulary and transitions to enhance and connect reasons and details in text.
  4. Use basic grammar to construct text of coherently linked simple, compound and complex sentences. 
  5. Use self and peer feedback to clarify meaning and better address the writing purpose. 
  6. Proofread and apply knowledge of writing conventions to enhance reader understanding. 
  7. Use technology to accomplish required tasks.

    • Determine purpose for writing 
    • Consideraudience and how it will affect content and organization of text

    • Use graphic organizers and outlines to prepare for writing 
  • Use Writing Process 
    • Write paragraphs with topic sentence, supporting details, evidence or reasons, and concluding sentence 
    • Useenumerative (first, second) and transition words (because, since) to connect opinions and reasons 
    • Support major ideas and arguments with evidence, details, reasons or opinions 
    • Use a range of vocabulary to enhance text 
  • Edit and Proofread 
    • Edit and proofread for basic writing conventions in grammar, usage, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and vocabulary usage.  
    • Use a variety of sentences (simple, compound, and complex) to enhance paragraphs 
    • Use tools to edit/proofread such as peer editing, dictionaries, editing checklists, or simple rubrics 
    • Digital Literacy 
    • Use conventions of formatting 
    • Use word processing software (Google and/or Word) 
    • Use email and email etiquette 
    • Apply digital file organization 
    • Use college learning management system
