FRP 162 Managing Fire Personnel

Introduces fire department human resource management techniques. Includes hiring, supervision and performance review procedures.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. List essential functions and required and desirable qualifications for fire service positions used for hiring in Oregon. 
  2. Design recruitment and selection processes for fire personnel. 
  3. Explain the impact of job satisfaction, rewards/recognition, pay/benefits, and training on the motivation and retention of employees. 
  4. Explain the purpose of performance reviews and conduct these processes. 
  5. Identify the types of disciplinary action which can be used and describe the legal processes which need to be followed during their use. 
  6. Discuss possible labor-management relations issues. 
  7. Review the role of management in developing quality training programs for staff. 
  8. Describe management’s responsibility to ensure employee health and safety. 
  9. Use personnel resources to operate the engine house and conduct fire ground operations using the industry standards of safety and efficiency.
