FRP 174 Fire Investigation

Emphasizes the importance of determining the cause of fire. Studies the burning characteristics of combustibles and the effects of fire on materials, interpreting burn patterns and isolating the area and point of origin, identifying incendiary indications, sources of ignition and materials ignited and preservation of fire scene and evidence.

Prerequisite: FRP 150  with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Gather evidence in a fire cause investigation including determining point of origin, fire cause, and protection of evidence. 
  2. Describe the fire department’s responsibility with regard to fatal fires. 
  3. Identify factors, which may indicate an incendiary fire, discuss fire setting motives, and identify, collect, remove, and preserve evidence. 
  4. Conduct preliminary interviews at the fire scene. 
  5. Describe how to determine loss to structure and contents. 
  6. Describe attack, salvage, and overhaul techniques, which enhance fire investigation. 
  7. Describe combustion properties of liquids and gases and their effects of fire travel. 
  8. Describe the use of photography in preserving evidence at a fire scene. 
  9. Identify dangerous building conditions created by fire. 
  10. Explain the precautions to be observed and followed in hazardous material areas. 
  11. Prepare diagrams or sketches of a building to record the locations of items of concern. 
  12. Collect and record in writing, information required for the purpose of preparing a report including accurate loss estimation. 
  13. Describe the legal requirements pertaining to the admissibility of evidence. 
  14. Identify the common causes of fires and their prevention. 
  15. Identify basic legal responsibilities associated with fire investigation. 
  16. Identify which local, regional and/or state agency may assist in fire investigations. 
  17. Describe char and burn pattern characteristics of common materials. 
  18. Identify the advantages of fire investigation reporting on fire and building codes. 
  19. Identify the procedures for investigating a fatal fire and a wildland fire. 
  20. Identify basic knowledge of local and state data collection for fire prevention.
