FRP 257 Hazardous Materials for Inspectors Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Covers how to handle inspections involving hazardous materials. Covers the requirements for handling, storing and reporting on various hazardous materials.
Prerequisite: Consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Define and describe characteristics for recognition of certain hazardous materials.
- Explain how to identify, store, handle, isolate, and protect hazardous materials.
- Describe local and state codes and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials.
- Identify the fire hazards associated with the storage, handling, and use of flammable and combustible liquids, gasses, pressurized gases, combustible metals, and plastics.
- Describe the regulatory labeling and placarding systems for various types and quantities of hazardous materials.
- Describe local and state incident reporting systems after a hazardous materials emergency response.
- Define and identify some safety precautions to be observed and followed in hazardous materials storage areas.
- Identify venting devices installed on storage tanks for flammable and combustible liquids.
- Demonstrate the use of the Department of Transportation Emergency Response Guidebook and/or other appropriate publications relating to hazardous materials.
- Identify unstable material characteristics and name common unstable materials.
- Identify sources of detailed and technical information about various hazardous materials.
- Identify the classifications of explosives and define approved storage facilities required per classification.
- Describe toxic and reactive materials and name common examples.
- Identify the common hazards associated with the storage, handling, and use of explosives, including fireworks.
- Identify radioactive material characteristics and name common radioactive materials.
- Identify the fire hazards associated with the storage, handling, and use of natural and synthetic fibers.
- Define properties of corrosives and name the more common corrosives.
- Identify properties of oxidizing materials and be able to name the more common oxidizing materials.
