Prerequisite: Consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Define and describe characteristics for recognition of certain hazardous materials.
  2. Explain how to identify, store, handle, isolate, and protect hazardous materials.
  3. Describe local and state codes and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials.
  4. Identify the fire hazards associated with the storage, handling, and use of flammable and combustible liquids, gasses, pressurized gases, combustible metals, and plastics.
  5. Describe the regulatory labeling and placarding systems for various types and quantities of hazardous materials.
  6. Describe local and state incident reporting systems after a hazardous materials emergency response.
  7. Define and identify some safety precautions to be observed and followed in hazardous materials storage areas.
  8. Identify venting devices installed on storage tanks for flammable and combustible liquids.
  9. Demonstrate the use of the Department of Transportation Emergency Response Guidebook and/or other appropriate publications relating to hazardous materials.
  10. Identify unstable material characteristics and name common unstable materials.
  11. Identify sources of detailed and technical information about various hazardous materials.
  12. Identify the classifications of explosives and define approved storage facilities required per classification.
  13. Describe toxic and reactive materials and name common examples.
  14. Identify the common hazards associated with the storage, handling, and use of explosives, including fireworks.
  15. Identify radioactive material characteristics and name common radioactive materials.
  16. Identify the fire hazards associated with the storage, handling, and use of natural and synthetic fibers.
