HM 150 Professional Development and Communication for Health Information Management

Provides a comprehensive environment for students to become proficient in skills required of a healthcare office professional develop leadership qualities, enhance awareness of diversity in the healthcare workplace, develop interpersonal communication skills and provides a setting for self-improvement. Introduces social networking for healthcare professionals, resume development and gives practical experience for phone and in-person employment interviews. Presents information concerning employment rights, and provides a setting for self-improvement and continuing education.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Apply principles and techniques of team leadership 
  2. Participate in and work in teams and committees. 
  3. Describe the importance of punctuality, stability, professional image, and reliability in maintaining a healthcare position. 
  4. Discuss how substance abuse affects the workplace. 
  5. Discuss how positive attitudes, non-verbal communication, and interpersonal communication skills contribute to a healthy work environment. 
  6. Relate the importance of diversity in the healthcare setting. 
  7. Apply the concepts of informal team communication and teambuilding in the workplace. 
  8. Develop a resume and cover letter, setup a profile on LinkedIn, and demonstrate effective interview skills through a mock phone and video interview. 
  9. Describe how to exceed customer expectations over the phone and in-person for both internal and external customers. 
  10. Identify and apply techniques for working with confrontational conversations, customer complaints, and facility emergencies.
