HS 156 Counseling Theories Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Introduces the major counseling theories and evidence based practices that have demonstrated effectiveness with substance disorders and a variety of mental health issues. Presents an overview of ten specific theories, their founders, key concepts, techniques and appropriate applications.
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Explain the key concepts of a variety of theories including psychoanalytic, Adlerian, existential, person-centered, gestalt, reality, behaviorism, cognitive-behavioral, feminist, and family systems.
- Identify the theories, research, and best-practice literature related to treatment outcomes.
- Analyze and discuss the role of the counselor.
- Define the helping relationship as characterized by warmth, respect, genuineness, concreteness, and empathy.
- Apply the ten theories to specific cases.
- Interpret and discuss the therapeutic uses of power and authority.
- Define transference, counter-transference, and projective identification.
- Compare and contrast the ten major counseling theories.
