Introduces the hospitality industry as a single, interrelated industry composed of food and beverage; catering and banquets; resorts and lodging; and managed services. Includes industry components, their current issues, and future trends. Assesses the impact of North America’s changing demographics and lifestyles. Discusses economic impact, career opportunities, and service ethics.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Discuss the importance of the interactions of all facility departments that directly relate to guest satisfaction. 
  2. Identify the sociological, psychological, and cultural factors influencing each of the components of the hospitality industry. 
  3. Discuss the economic contributions of the hospitality industry to global economy. 
  4. Review independent vs. chain-affiliated facilities to compare and illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of each. 
  5. Research and review career options and qualifications for entering and advancement opportunities in the hospitality industry.
