HTM 104 Tourism and Travel Industry

Explores the major concepts in tourism, what makes tourism possible and how tourism can become an important factor in the economics of any nation, region, state or local area. Discusses the fundamentals of the tourism system and the key costs and benefits of a tourism economy. Promotes understanding and knowledge of the diverse elements that comprise the travel and tourism industry and the factors that influence growth and development. Uses examples of tourism development practices in Oregon.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Define and discuss the modern tourism industry. 
  2. Distinguish among the various types and functions of tourism organizations. 
  3. Examine and assess the role of attractions in terms of destination development. 
  4. Relate the significance of passenger transportation to tourism planning models and identify the key trends in the transportation industry as they apply to tourism. 
  5. Explain the economic impact of tourism, balance of payments, elasticity and inelasticity and the multiplier effect. 
  6. Define demand and its application and importance in tourism development planning; relate the various methods of forecasting supply and demand. 
  7. Relate and identify the basic political, social and environmental aspects of tourism development. 
  8. Research and review career options and qualifications for entering and advancement opportunities in tourism.
