MED 125 Medical Assisting, Advanced Procedures

Surveys advanced clinical/laboratory knowledge and skills required of the medical office assistant. Emphasizes electrocardiography, hematology, urinalysis, microbiology, respiratory testing, clinical pharmacology, as well as, administration of medications, phlebotomy, and assisting the physician with procedures. Covers diet modification, radiology, principles of heat and cold application, and common emergencies.

Prerequisite: Admission into the Medical Assisting program.
Corequisite: MED 124 , MED 130 , and MED 131 .
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Prepare a patient for an electrocardiogram and record a 12-lead ECG tracing. 
  2. Perform common laboratory tests and procedures on urine, stool, blood, and throat swab specimens. 
  3. Collect and handle patient specimens in a safe manner, utilizing OSHA and laboratory standards. 
  4. Describe and apply principles of quality assurance to laboratory equipment, supplies, and tests. 
  5. Use industry standard procedures for administration of oral and parenteral medications. 
  6. Calculate the correct dosage for drug administration using one or two systems of measurement. 
  7. Use industry standard procedures for obtaining a blood sample from a patient by venipuncture and by capillary puncture. 
  8. Discuss principles of normal nutrition. 
  9. Perform the procedures of aseptic and sterile techniques in regards to assisting with medical and surgical procedures. 
  10. Explain the various special x-ray diagnostic procedures. 
  11. Describe the effects of heat and cold on the body and why they are important treatment modalities. 
  12. Explain the importance of physical therapy in the treatment of physical disabilities. 
  13. Perform respiratory testing procedures. 
  14. Identify the legal and ethical responsibilities of their actions as a medical office assistant.
