SLP 284 Language Therapy Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Offers an advanced clinical course in language therapy and intervention for students pursuing training as speech-language pathology assistant. Focuses primarily on the age groups of early childhood, childhood, and adolescence; however, intervention approaches that can be used successfully with adults are reviewed. Provides directed application of language, cognitive, and behavioral therapy techniques in individual and group intervention modalities. Reviews integration of interpersonal and paraprofessional knowledge and skills into clinical activities.
Prerequisite: SLP 180 , SLP 182 , and SLP 183 ; or consent of instructor. (All prerequisite courses must be completed with a grade of C or better.) Student Learning Outcomes:
- Demonstrate various types of language intervention with a wide age range of client/student/patient populations from early childhood through adult populations.
- Identify clinical terminology related to langauge intervention used in clinical documentation and communication with SLP supervisor.
- Synthesize and report information on various language strategies obtained during observations.
- Utilize various language reception modalities to elicit target language behaviors.
- Provide appropriate cuing to elicit specific behavior(s).
- Create and implement a langauge lesson/treatment plan including data collection and self reflection of progress.
