SLP 286 Speech Intervention with Children, Adolescents and Adults

Presents an advanced clinical intervention course for speech language pathology assistants. Covers the various components of group and individual therapy. Discusses treatment content creation, cueing, pacing and scaffolding. Includes the application of reinforcement schedules. Reviews various data collection methods and systems for a variety of intervention types and settings.  Covers various reserach based interventions for teaching various speech sound and phonological teaching and correction strategies.

Prerequisite: SLP 180  and SLP 181 , each with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Use appropriate materials and models to elicit target speech sounds.
  2. Provide production instructions/directions that are clear, concise, and appropriate to developmental age and level of understanding, including various types of modeling, cuing, and prompting.
  3. Follow intervention protocols of varying complexities in modifying speech behavior.
  4. Apply various types of reinforcement schedules to increase the number of correct behaviors produced.
  5. Provide accurate feedback based on the correctness of the student’s/client’s response.
  6. Maintain on-task behavior in group and individual intervention contexts.
  7. Provide age-appropriate and culturally sensitive treatment materials specific for the targeted speech sound(s) that are the focus of the session.
  8. Accurately record target speech behaviors, and compute the degree of the student’s/client’s response during intervention sessions.
  9. Describe, using behavioral terms, a student’s/client’s behavior.
  10. Summarize the progress verbally and in the clinical record in a data-driven format.
  11. Differentiate between identification of speech sound and phonological speech disorders and interventions.
