ENL 031P Basic English Pronunciation 1 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Credits: 3
Introduces basic principles of American English pronunciation. Focuses on developing a pronunciation plan using a dictionary to pronounce words, pronouncing English vowels and consonants, syllables, word endings, and word stress. Designed for non-native English speakers at the low intermediate level.
Prerequisite: Placement by ESOL program specialist. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Use a phonetic alphabet system to pronounce vocabulary.
- Develop, use and modify a personal plan to monitor and improve speech patterns that interfere with intelligibility.
- Apply basic rules of English vowels, consonants, syllabication, word endings and word stress, to improve intelligibility.
