BH 213 Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Examines the effects of cultural differences between the individual served and behavioral health provider. Increases awareness of racial, ethnic, and other cultural diversity. Focuses on intercultural competence to develop and apply appropriate intervention strategies in cross-cultural situations. 

Prerequisite: Admitted to Behavioral Health program, or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1.  Increase awareness and knowledge of cultural differences, and the skills needed to function effectively in a pluralistic society. 
  2.  Identify and examine personal biases, assumptions, values, attitudes, and limitations and how these can affect cross-cultural relationships.  
  3.  Explain social, political, and historical factors that confront racial, ethnic, and other cultural groups. 
  4.  Make associations of how privilege and power relations in U.S. society are inextricably interrelated with racial, ethnic, and cultural group membership.  
  5.  Explore various racial, ethnic, and cultural groups and examine their influence on members’ worldview.  
  6.  Develop the skills to respond in culturally appropriate ways to work effectively across cultures.  
  7.  Describe personal biases, stereotypes, past experiences, and potential areas of conflict related to working cross-culturally.
  8.  Identify the student’s own group memberships and identities and describe how these might influence their work with clients who are similar and different.
