BH 216 Assessment and Treatment Planning

Introduces diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders as well as a non-substance related disorder. Provides a systematic approach to screening, assessment, identification of and placement in appropriate level of care, and treatment planning in order to determine the most appropriate initial course of action given the client’s needs, characteristics, and available resources. Provides significant opportunity for hands-on practice.

Prerequisite: Admitted into Behavioral Health program; and completion of BH 214   with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Recommended: Concurrent enrollment in BH 284 - BH 288.

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Relate symptoms and terminology of intoxication, withdrawal, and toxicity for all psychoactive substances.  
  2. Relate symptoms and terminology for Non-Substance-Related Disorder. 
  3. Describe the elements of crisis intervention, including client suicide risk and danger to others.  
  4. Use industry approved screening instruments including assessment of readiness to change.
  5. Apply diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders and describe diagnostic criteria for other major mental health disorders.  
  6. Conduct a comprehensive assessment that is sensitive to age, gender, culture, sexual orientation, disabilities, and readiness to change.  
  7. Apply indicated placement criteria based on screening and assessment data and available resources.  
  8. Develop appropriate treatment plans based on client needs and available resources. 
  9. Apply various treatment alternatives and modalities, including aspects of psychopharmacology.  
  10. Evaluate treatment efficacy for clients.
