BH 288A Practicum: Addiction Studies

Provides experience working on-site in an addiction treatment agency to integrate field and classroom experiences. Offers Addiction Studies students two different practicum sites, each at least two terms in length, during the Addiction Studies degree acquisition. The second practicum is more comprehensive and provides an opportunity to develop more advanced skills. Students in the post-baccalaureate Addiction Counselor Certification Program remain at one site for three terms.

Prerequisite: BH 150 Behavioral Health Student Success

Completion of BH 170 , BH 203 , and BH 214 with a grade of C or better in each course; or consent of instructor. Students must also register with the Mental Health and Addiction Certification Board of Oregon (MHACBO) prior to starting the first term of practicum.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Awareness of client individual treatment needs based on cultural norms, language, values, beliefs, gender, trauma history, and economic status.
Use case management skills for client care coordination.
Participate in consultation and referral services for clients and agency partners.
Conduct and compose screenings and assessments.
Utilize ASAM and DSM criteria when performing assessments.
Develop discharge and relapse prevention plans with clients.
Co-facilitate group, individual, family, and couples addiction treatment, education, and counseling sessions.
Understand crisis intervention practices.
Document client participation and progress using electronic medical records.
Meet agency personnel and professional standards.
