CJ 237 Public Safety Leadership and Ethics 2: Philosophy of Leadership

Explores the various roles of leadership as they relate to being a team builder, delegator, conflict resolution facilitator, coach, and mentor. Focuses on gaining an understanding of communication processes, empowerment, and leading in a diverse environment. Explores various theories of including situational leadership, transformational leadership, and servant leadership. including situational.

Prerequisite: CJ 103  with criminal history clearance; or current professional in the field; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Describe the qualities, traits, and characteristics necessary to successfully lead others. 
  2. Articulate the importance of developing and communicating a vision of the future as it relates to leading others. 
  3. Explain and apply the skills necessary to communicate and build relationships with others. 
  4. Identify barriers to team-building and methods to break down those barriers. 
  5. Define basic leadership theories and relate them to leadership skills. 
  6. Describe the importance of empowerment in leading others. 
  7. Describe leadership needs and processes for conflict resolution in a diverse environment. 
  8. Apply leadership skills to positively influence others. 
  9. Modify the Personal Leadership Development Plan to include team building and empowerment skills.
