DSL 110 Diesel Engine Diagnosis and Repair

Introduces the student to diesel engine theory and repair, placing emphasis on inspection, testing, and diagnostic techniques for internal combustion engines. Includes general engine diagnosis; removal and reinstallation; cylinder heads and valve trains diagnosis and repair; engine blocks assembly diagnosis and repair; lubrication diagnosis and repair.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 080  and MTH 052 ; or consent of instructor.
Corequisite: none
Concurrent: DSL 111 .
Maximum number of credits course can be taken for: 6


Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Analyze and determine the problem and implement the correct repair of diesel engines, components, and systems.
  2. Conduct repairs in an ethical and professional manner, respecting industry safety and environmental guidelines.
  3. Communicate with co-workers, customers, management, and public in a professional and knowledgeable manner.
  4. Learn and understand diesel engine operating theory.
  5. Learn how to properly disassemble and reassemble a Diesel engine.
  6. Learn the appropriate skills required to correctly diagnose and repair diesel engine.
  7. Learn correct industry repair and diagnostic procedures
  8. Learn how to use electronic service information to correctly find repair information and procedures.
  9. Learn correct safety procedures
  10. Learn appropriate time management skills
  11. Learn basic fuels which includes an introduction to injectors and sensors commonly used on diesel engines.
  12. Learn basic lift truck maintenance and service and become forklift operator certified.

    • Crankshaft/camshaft and lifters 
    • Measure crankshaft journals, cam journals, and pistons, bore, rods 
  • Cylinder head and valve train mechanisms 
    • Disassemble cylinder head and measure valves, guides, springs, sealing surfaces, valve seats, and installed height 
    • Valves, springs, and retainers 
    • Reassemble cylinder heads 
    • Valve adjustments on common diesel engines 
    • Adjust valves on a Detroit diesel 
  • Diesel engine lubrication system
