HM 230 Health Information Management Practicum

Provides workplace experience in a healthcare-related setting. Covers policies and procedures in tasks set forth by site, develop skills using various software applications, and to help students perform as an entry-level coding professional.

Prerequisite: Enrolled in healthcare coding certificate program. You must earn grades of “C” or better in all required courses in the first two terms.

Student Learning Outcomes:

Participate in a facility-based practicum experience or a campus-based real-world application experience, either face-to-face or remotely.
Demonstrate applying ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS codes ensuring compliance with current guidelines and regulations. Apply ethical principles and standards to promote integrity and accuracy.
Demonstrate use of healthcare information systems and coding software to manage patient information and process claims.
Use critical thinking skills to evaluate and resolve billing and coding discrepancies.
Communicate effectively with healthcare providers, patients and insurance companies demonstrating professionalism and ethical standards.
Perform a coding and revenue cycle project encompassing inpatient, outpatient, and surgical patient types, overseen by Chemeketa HIM staff.
Recognize the importance of continuing education and certification in the fields of healthcare coding and billing for employability.
