PHM 231 Pharmacology 1 Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Introduces the fundamental principles of pharmacology and the role of the pharmacy technician in supporting safe medication use. Focuses on mechanisms of drug action, therapeutic effects, and contraindications of medications affecting the nervous, musculoskeletal, and anti-infective systems. Emphasizes accurate terminology, patient safety, and understanding of technician responsibilities related to medication handling and communication.
Concurrent: PHM 235 Maximum number of credits course can be taken for: 4
Student Learning Outcomes:
- Describe basic pharmacological concepts including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and mechanisms of drug action. (ASHP 2.5, 4.1)
- Identify major drug classifications for the nervous, musculoskeletal, and anti-infective systems, including therapeutic uses and prototypes. (ASHP 2.5, 3.4, 4.1)
- Explain common adverse effects, contraindications, and interactions associated with these drug classes. (ASHP 4.2, 4.7)
