BH 201 Family Recovery Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Presents basic information regarding the effects of behavioral health conditions on the whole family. Focuses on family systems and dynamics related to coping with substance use disorders and other chronic conditions that impact the family throughout its life cycle. Introduces the family counseling models, including strengths-based and solution-oriented approaches.
Prerequisite: Completion of BH218A with a grade of C or better; admitted to Behavioral Health program; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Explain how each family member is affected by substance abuse and other behavioral health conditions.
- Identify the resources and research regarding family treatment for substance use disorders and other conditions.
- Identify common characteristics and family dynamics operating in the family system.
- Identify the family counseling models.
- Describe and appropriately use models of engagement, diagnosis, and intervention to assist families in treatment and recovery processes.
- Discuss strategies that develop basic skills to cope with the emotional intensity and power dynamics commonly seen in family systems that are coping with substance use disorders and other behavioral health conditions.
