XHSC 0911K Reading Strategies for College

Develops and enhances reading strategies. Explores techniques for better understanding and development of summarizing, inference, context clues, inter-textual relationships, metacognition, critical thinking, visual literacy, and vocabulary.  

Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Use a variety of comprehension strategies for better understanding of material. 
  2. Determine meanings of words using contextual and structural clues. 
  3. Make connections to text, within text, and among texts across subject areas. 
  4. Identify and/or summarize sequence of events, main ideas, facts, supporting details, and opinions in informational and practical selections. 
  5. Infer an author’s unstated meaning and draw conclusions about an author’s stated meaning based on facts, events, images, patterns or symbols found in text. 
  6. Analyze key elements of fiction: character, theme, tone, figurative language.
