SLP 295 SLPA Capstone & Professional Integration

Provides a culminating experience for students to integrate academic knowledge with hands-on clinical experience, allowing students to demonstrate the competencies required for entry-level SLPA practice under the supervision of a licensed Speech-Language Pathologist. Refines clinical and professional skills through reflective analysis and deeper understanding of learned skills gained through the SLPA program. Completes a comprehensive portfolio project. Emphasis is placed on various assessment measures used in clinical practice, accurate documentation, effective communication, problem solving, and professional collaboration.

Prerequisite: Completion of SLP 288 and SLP 289 both with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Concurrent: SLP290

Student Learning Outcomes:

Demonstrate project planning and implementation skills to prepare a capstone project that demonstrates applied understanding of SLPA roles, responsibilities, and impact in service delivery.
Integrate academic learning and fieldwork experiences to demonstrate mastery of SLPA competencies.
Demonstrate understanding and practical implementation of various assessment processes including screenings of speech and language, hearing.
Reflect on Professional Growth - Critically analyze personal development and identify strategies for continued learning and career advancement.
Undergo a more extensive review of topics related to clinical practice including behavior and group management, difficult speech sound disorders
Review and gain a more extensive understanding of the auditory system function, physiology and assessment types. Further review associated disorders and syndromes with hearing impact.

Content Outline

Assessment
- screening practice and design for speech, language and hearing screenings
Speech Sound Disorders
- Synthesize various methods and strategies for speech sound disorders with unique challenges. Such topics may include traditional speech sound methods, Complexity Approach, Backwards Chaining.
Audiology:
- Exploration of the auditory system including a further review of associated disorders, anatomy, associated syndromes and conditions that may impact auditory skills.
- Exploration of different types of audiological exams and measurements
Clinical Management
- Behavior management techniques for unique challenges and populations of clients
- Behavior management strategies for groups of clients in various settings.
