MUP 274 Applied Voice Lessons

Offers individual voice lessons for Music majors. Includes one 60-minute lesson and an additional 60 minutes of activities each week, such as attending master classes, seminars, and studio classes. Prepares students for university auditions using instructor-assigned repertoire. Culminates in a final jury performance before a panel of voice specialists, who evaluate and provide valuable feedback.

Prerequisite: Completion of 6 credits of MUP 174 with a grade C or higher; or consent of instructor.
Maximum number of credits course can be taken for: 6

Student Learning Outcomes:

Understand and use healthy vocal technique;
Identify healthy vs. unhealthy use of your voice;
Develop a personal practice routine;
Interpret and translate the music assigned for the term;
Use techniques to gain confidence and prepare for the final performance (juries) as well as auditions for universities.

Content Outline

Advanced Vocal Pedagogy and Healthy Vocal Technique:
- Exploring vocal anatomy through demonstration and explanation to support optimal vocal health and performance.
Text and Poetry Analysis for Vocal Performance:
- Preparing, translating, and interpreting song texts to enhance musical and emotional expression.
Repertoire Study and Performance Practice:
- Memorizing, rehearsing, and performing assigned pieces with attention to technical and artistic excellence.
Performance Development through Master Classes and Seminars:
- Engaging in collaborative sessions to refine stage presence, interpretation, and professional performance skills.
