Introduces the diverse musical traditions and cultures beyond the Western framework. Explores vibrant musical traditions often excluded from standard music curricula. Engages in active listening, hands-on study of less common instruments, and detailed analysis of unique rhythmic and melodic structures. Broadens understanding of music’s role in shaping cultural identity, storytelling, and social movements. Incorporates Asian musical traditions beyond the United States and Europe by examining musical styles. Designed to be inclusive and accessible to students of all musical backgrounds, regardless of prior experience.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher) with a grade of C or better.

Identify and describe key characteristics of selected non-Western musical traditions through active listening and guided analysis.
Analyze and compare rhythmic, melodic, and structural systems from diverse world cultures to recognize unique musical principles beyond Western traditions.

Content Outline

Introduction to World Music - Overview of the major musical traditions from countries such as China, India, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, Africa, Australia, and the Middle East.
Instrumental studies - A detailed look at traditional instruments, such as the sitar, erhu, guzheng, pipa, oud, and kanun.
Vocal Traditions- Study basic vocal styles, including classical singing and folk traditions.
Contemporary Trends- Examining how globalization and fusion genres influence modern Asian music.
Cultural Context- Analysis of music’s role in cultural ceremonies, festivals, and everyday life in various global societies.
