BLD 182 Mechanical Codes 2 Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Examines the mechanical code requirements for chimneys and vents serving fuel burning appliances and equipment; special solid fuel and fuel gas burning appliances and equipment; kitchen hoods, grease ducts, hazardous exhaust ducts, and product conveying ducts; refrigerants, refrigeration systems, and refrigeration mechanical rooms; boilers, hot water heaters, and pressure vessels; hydronic piping and solar heating systems; and fuel oil piping and storage tanks.
Prerequisite: BLD 181 with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Apply mechanical code general requirements for the construction and installation of chimneys and vents.
- Apply a manufacturer’s installation instructions to the installation and inspection of a variety of heat producing appliances.
- Apply exhaust system code requirements for specific hazardous, non-hazardous, and product-conveying systems.
- Identify the different types of approved kitchen exhaust hoods that are required for use with various commercial kitchen appliances and equipment and apply the code requirements for ventilation and make up air to inspections.
- Use the basic principles of refrigeration and identify basic refrigeration system components and apply code requirements that regulate refrigeration systems and refrigeration machinery rooms.
- Differentiate the special definitions, and the installation and inspection requirements for boilers, water heaters, and pressure vessels.
- Describe the different components, and installation, inspection, and test requirements for hydronic piping systems.
- Describe the different components and installation requirements for fuel oil piping systems and storage tanks and the components and installation requirements for solar heating systems.
- Apply mechanical codes to residential construction and inspection practices.
