CHN 102 First Year Chinese 2 Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Second course of a three-course sequence in introductory Mandarin Chinese language and culture class. Continues to emphasize effective communicative skills in both the written and spoken language, as well as an understanding of the practices and products of native Chinese culture. Expands the beginning learner’s language proficiency as well as cultural awareness and understanding.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Transcribe dictated phrases and sentences.
- Respond to spoken phrases, sentences and questions supported by context and redundancy.
- Pronounce Chinese words and sentences accurately and with correct tone.
- Engage in simple conversation: ask and answer questions, make plans, discuss daily activities.
- Interpret main ideas and some details from simple text.
- Interpret main ideas from short written texts, such as diaries or public transit information.
- Transcribe dictated phrases and sentences.
- Compose short written sentences, messages and simple letters.
- Describe selected aspects of geography, history, artistic heritage, and cultural practices in the Chinese world.
- Explain and use several behaviors and basic nonverbal cues in limited situations.
