CHN 103 First Year Chinese 3 Lecture Hours: 4 Credits: 4
Third course of three-course sequence in introductory Mandarin Chinese language and culture class. Includes additional expansion on effective communicative skills in both the written and spoken language, as well as the understanding of the practices and products of native Chinese culture. Continues to expand beginning learner’s proficiency, as well as cultural awareness and understanding.
Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115 (or higher), or completion of WR 090 (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Transcribe dictated phrases and sentences.
- Respond to spoken phrases, sentences and questions supported by context and redundancy.
- Speak sentences and questions with appropriate content to various audiences.
- Initiate and sustain conversation with details to express ideas.
- Interpret main ideas and details from simple written texts.
- Interpret main ideas and details from simple written materials, such as restaurant menus, directions or doctor’s instructions.
- Transcribe dictated material.
- Compose short written letters and paragraphs with some details.
- Describe selected aspects of geography, history, artistic heritage, and cultural practices in the Chinese world.
- Explain and use several behaviors and basic nonverbal cues in limited situations.
