CIS 125E Excel-Workbooks

Provides the tools necessary to create and use basic spreadsheets presenting them in a multi-worksheet environment using Microsoft Excel. Includes concepts associated with data types; how to build effective workbooks for use in projection; and analysis of typical business situations. Includes workbook applications such as the use of arithmetic formulas, functions, proper formatting, macros, graphics, pivot tables, charts, and other analysis tools available in Microsoft Excel. Extends to Business Intelligence (Power BI) with Microsoft Excel as a database. Includes concepts such as defining data models, queries, and forecast projections using charts and trend analysis.

Prerequisite: CIS 101  or CIS 120 , either with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Create, view, and open a new or existing workbook, enter text and numeric data into cells, manage rows and columns, copy and fill data, define workbook rows, columns, and page orientation for printing. 
  2. Demonstrate the use of fill colors, number formatting, borders, cell styles, conditional formatting, and headers and footers. 
  3. Demonstrate the use of formula constants, calculated values, relative and absolute referencing, date functions, logical functions, and What-If analysis. 
  4. Create pie charts, bar charts, column charts, sparklines and databars within worksheets, modify chart legends, axes, and chart titles. 
  5. Create and manage pivot tables and charts, sort and filter Excel databases. 
  6. Demonstrate the ability to work with grouped worksheets, link external 3D references in multiple workbooks, create workbook templates.
  7. Demonstrate the ability to use Named Cells and Ranges, use defined names in formulas, use and define Data Validation rules, insert comments into cells. 
  8. Demonstrate the use of Logical Functions and structured references, use various Lookup Functions, Count Functions, and Average Functions. 
  9. Create Excel Power BI Database Queries, Trendlines, Forecast Sheets, Manage Data in Power Query, Power Map, and Power View format.
