CJ 203 Crisis Intervention Lecture Hours: 3 Credits: 3
Introduces an overview of a crisis state to include its potential root cause, the needed officer response and mitigation in such contacts. Covers initial recognication, intervention, defusing and assessment, resolution and/or referral, with emphasis on subject and officer safety. Includes personal recognition of threat levels, voluntary compliance, verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, and mediation.
Corequisite: CJ 103 with criminal history clearance; or current professional in the field; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Identify personal effectiveness, self-control, and empathy as related to safety issues.
- Discuss the “art” of gaining compliance using verbal communication.
- Control difficult people and difficult situations in a non-violent manner.
- Assess situations and encounters and match them to corresponding resolutions and/or organizations.
- Identify ways to assess people, recognize threat levels and use appropriate physical force options
