CJ 261A Law Enforcement Related Experience 1

LERE 1 introduces the Law Enforcement Related Experience (LERE) sequence of courses required for the Associate of Applied Science degree in Law Enforcement. LERE 1 focuses on topics, training, and practical application covered in LERE coursework that aligns with best practices and the most modern techniques used in the law enforcement profession. Involves overview of Oregon Revised Statutes as related to driving offenses and their enforcement in unknown risk traffic stops. Covers the fitness and nutrition needed for a successful career. Discusses the roles and responsibilities of a law enforcement officer and the ethics required in the profession. Introduces the abilities needed for success through communication during basic police contacts, problem solving skills related to on and off duty decision making. Involves defensive tactics skill building and physical fitness training.

Prerequisite: Admission restricted to the students chosen through an application process; and CJ 103  with a grade of C or better, with criminal history clearance specific to Department of Public Saftey Standards and Training employment standards.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Locate commonly used/violated traffic statues in the Oregon Traffic Code Book.
  2. Relate ethical standards to daily life and law enforcement functions.
  3. Describe the importance of police note-taking and perform the skill of taking such notes as they relate to police report writing.
  4. Perform a Basic Police Contact following all guidelines as set through statute, Constitutional law, and court direction.
  5. Perform an Unknown Risk Traffic Stop following all officer safety guidelines and standards.
  6. Perform learned defensive tactics skills as they apply in a given situation.
