CJ 283 Corrections Officer Related Experience 3 Lecture Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 6 Credits: 6
CORE 3 focuses on topics, training, and modern techniques used in the corrections professions to include: emergency procedures, civil rights issues, court security, work crews, case management, transport procedures, communication skills, hiring procedures and court testimony. Includes continued practice and application in legal and ethical uses of force in order to function safely and effectively as an integral member of a correctional team, completion of the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT), development of overall mental health and wellness, defensive tactics skills, physical fitness training, report writing skills and exposure to facility tour(s)/agencies.
Prerequisite: CJ 282 with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor. Student Learning Outcomes:
- Apply defensive tactics skills within various scenario-based applications.
- Explain hiring procedures for local agency positions and next-steps to meeting them.
- Describe basic emergency procedures and responses with the corrections environment.
- Perform court security and work crew supervision within scenario-based training applications.
- Apply transport skills correctly within scenario-based training applications.
- Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate with someone who speaks a different language within scenario-based training applications.
- Describe civil rights violations that can occur within correctional settings.
- Relate traumatic incidents to safety protocols.
- Perform ORPAT.
