ED 258 Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Explores the concept of culture and the relationship with the learning process. Examine strategies to make culturally responsive teaching accessible as a practice. Discuss the value of cultural identity in the teacher-student-family relationship in linguistic diverse populations.

Prerequisite: Placement into WR 115  (or higher), or completion of WR 090  (or higher) with a grade of C or better; or consent of instructor.
Student Learning Outcomes:
  1. Demonstrate a foundational knowledge of the relation between neuroscience and culture. 
  2. Discuss the components of culturally responsive teaching. 
  3. Recognize and respond to the effects of the process of culture in the diverse classroom. 
  4. Apply techniques to incorporate culturally responsive pedagogy in the curriculum areas. 
  5. Explain the unique needs and characteristics of English Language Learners. 
  6. Exhibit an awareness of the importance of families and school/home partnerships.  
  7. Respond to verbal and non-verbal messages related to cultural differences.
